Fest to salute Towne, Howard, Whitaker

PARIS — The 31st Deauville Festival of American Film will hold tributes to screenwriter, helmer and script doctor Robert Towne; thesp-turned-helmer Ron Howard; and helmer-thesp Forest Whitaker. Fest runs Sept. 5-9.

These tributes join one previously announced for multihyphenate James Toback.

The 10 films in competition are “The Ballad of Jack and Rose,” by Rebecca Miller; “Brick,” Rian Johnson; “Crash,” Paul Haggis; “Edmond,” Stewart Gordon; “Forty Shades of Blue,” Ira Sachs; “Keane,” Lodge Kerrigan; “On the Outs,” Lori Silverbush and Michael Skolnik; “Pretty Persuasion,” Marcos Siega; “Reefer Madness,” Andy Fickman; and “Transamerica,” Duncan Tucker.

Although all the competition films have preemed or had commercial runs elsewhere, Harold Ramis’ “The Ice Harvest” and Danny Cannon’s “Goal!” will world preem at the fest.

Talent expected to attend includes Pierce Brosnan and Matt Dillon.

Meanwhile, Deauville’s previously announced literary award winner, Budd Schulberg, is polishing the script for a French film adapted from his short story “The Dare,” to be directed by Pierre Filmon. Story concerns a thirtysomething would-be novelist who works as a projectionist at a Paris arthouse.
